*What is Cupping?
Cupping is an ancient modality that creates negative pressure or suction on the applied area. It has its roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and in that context it is used to remove blockages in Qi, or life force energy, to create balance and overall health in the body. When used for this purpose, cups are usually placed on specific points and left there with little or no movement. In my practice, I do cupping massage, which means i may occasionally leave a cup in one spot, but usually I keep the cups moving and have an intention of working more with the tissues and muscles. Much of massage consists of pushing down, so cupping can provide a wonderful myofascial release by lifting instead to create space for the body to unwind. Be aware that cupping can leave behind bruise like marks because of the blood-- and therefore nutrients and oxygen-- it brings to an area.
